Specialist veterinary nutrition consultations

Ensuring that each pet gets the best and most appropriate nutrition is vital to maintaining their health and wellbeing. While the majority of pets maintain excellent health whilst being fed a high-quality, commercial diet, there are times when the input of a veterinary nutrition specialist can be invaluable. Both pet owners and veterinary professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of proper nutrition when it comes to maintaining our pet’s health, preventing disease and as an important aspect of management in many disease states.

A veterinary nutrition specialist is a veterinary surgeon that has undergone years of additional specialist training in the area of nutrition. When consulting with a recognised specialist in veterinary nutrition, you can be confident that the advice provided is based on the most up-to-date scientific knowledge and any diet formulations or recommendations will be optimal for your pet and their individual needs. Scenarios where a consultation with a nutrition specialist might be useful include;

  • Formulation of balanced, home-prepared diets
  • Recommending or formulating diets for specific diseases or conditions (eg chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease and other chronic gastrointestinal diseases, liver disease, orthopaedic disease)
  • Dietary recommendation and formulation for patients that will not eat a commercial diet
  • Dietary recommendation for patients with weight loss or weight gain

To ensure that you and your pet get the best and most appropriate nutrition advice, suited to your pet’s individual needs and history, our specialist nutrition consultation service works closely with your primary care veterinary surgeon and all consultations and advice are provided solely through your primary care practice.

To request a nutrition consultation, simply complete our online consultation request form. Once we receive this form, we will contact both you and your local veterinary practice with an additional form to be completed and sent back to us. This additional form allows us to collect a detailed diet history for your pet and ensures we understand any concurrent illness, so that we can formulate the most appropriate nutrition plan.

As we require this additional form to be completed in conjunction with your local vet, it is not compulsory to have seen your local vet within the 4 weeks prior to requesting your nutrition consultation. Once we have received the completed forms, our nutrition specialist will review your pet’s history, evaluate their individual needs, and create a nutrition plan (including a recipe for a home-prepared diet, if requested). This detailed written nutrition plan will be sent to your primary care practice, who will provide you with a copy.

Nutrition consultations cost £189.00.

What we do

We provide a service that allows pet owners to consult with veterinary specialists by telephone or video consultation.

We offer independent, specialist advice from the comfort of your own home and without the commitment of further tests, treatment or significant costs. During the consultation with one of our specialists, we can discuss all aspects of the pet’s condition, including options and recommendations for further investigation, the diagnosis (or potential diagnoses), potential treatment options and the likely prognosis.
